The town of San Pedro

Where in the world are we?

Ambergris Caye, Belize

For the next 4 weeks we'll be in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

Ambergris Caye is a small Caribbean island, about 1.5hrs by boat from Belize City, and located just underneath Mexico.

For those not familiar with Belize, here are a few facts (some taken from the Awake of October 2014);

Belize has tropical forests and turquoise waters surrounding a multitude of islands along its coast - including Ambergris Caye.

Hundreds of bird and animal species can be found in this country, including pelicans, cormorants, red fire ants, bats, iguanas, jaguars, manatees, ocelots, tapirs, turtles, snakes and sharks.

Belize’s coral reef is over 180 miles (290 km) long. It's part of the second largest barrier reef in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Belize was once part of the Maya civilization. Spanish conquistadores arrived in the 16th century but did not fully defeat the Maya. Later, the British wrested control of the area and in 1862 officially declared it to be the colony of British Honduras. In 1981, Belize gained independence.

Belizeans are as colourful as their surroundings. Some of the primary ethnic groups are Creole, East Indian, Garifuna, Maya, and Mestizo.

In Belize, there are congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses in American Sign Language, Belize Kriol, English, Low German, Mandarin Chinese, Maya (Mopán), and Spanish.

We'll be joining the English congregation in San Pedro, but will take the opportunity to improve our Spanish and learn some Belize Kriol (which is an awesome language!!)
